Sequel Mumbai, the clean eating space has come out with their third outpost at BKC.
If there’s one change we’ve made to our own lives this year, it’s to eat healthier and focus on conscious eating. As the year is almost coming to a close, even with the festive food hanging mid-air, it’s time to start that clean eating process, to settle into 2021 on a good note. Exactly one good reason why Sequel Mumbai, the city’s favourite clean, organic eating space, has come out with their third outpost at BKC and a mindful and simple menu.
I’ll be honest, it’s my first time venturing to eat out after a long hiatus, and I was unsure of how to go about it. And Sequel, with its sublime space on Instagram, made it look like social distancing is doable while dining out and feeling good. All while restoring your sanity, some normalcy and some good organic fare that is sure to soothe your mind and your soul. We’ve already known the popularity of Sequel, Chef Vanika Choudhary’s baby that has clean eating at the forefront with their power-packed smoothies, alluring acai bowls, and Pinterest-worthy plating, and that’s the other two outlets, the cafe space that was sought-after by millennials looking for a healthy bite.
The third outpost and the one we ventured into at BKC is the first restaurant openings in the country to take place during the pandemic, and it’s a mindfully curated space for fine dining with newer additions to the menu. The cherry on the cake is the stunning interiors done by Mumbai’s favourite architect designer Ashiesh Shah who made sure that everything is thoughtfully placed, minimalistic, and seamless.
As you enter, there are three spaces you see – one for that deli-like feel where you pick up and go, a sit-down and have a quick bite space like a cafe, the fine dining room is for lounging four-feet away from people and is designed specifically to give you privacy. The fact that the location is the busy office-goer’s environs makes this design a smart one as it caters to everyone looking for a space that fits their agenda. The busy workers can pick up their orders while an evening stroll can result in a hurried smoothie at the cafe and if there’s a boss to impress or catch up for a post-office drink, the fine-dining space comes in handy.
Everything about the interiors that Shah created speaks to the minimalist – the light drapes, warm honey oak wood veneers, the retro rose gold lamps on individual tables and the soft panelling, alongside uncomplicated lighting and lounge chairs. The 2000sqft space speaks volumes about Sequel, and it’s love for sustainability, slow living and simplicity – traits and ideas both shared in food and spaces by Shah and Chaudhary. Ashish made sure his signature ‘Wabi-Sabi’ aesthetic is rightly showcased at this fine-dining space, which is a first for Sequel.
Everything is organic and natural, made with hand-crafted materials. One signature piece that follows the space is the naturally-lacquered, off-white Channapatna beads, handmade in Karnataka, floating seven feet above the ground – and we sat right under it allowing ourselves to soak in the vibe and the warmth of the place. The bar area is softer but more nuanced – it came with clean lines and a wall full of beautiful wines. Everything points out to a carefully curated space, even the cutlery that is heavy to the touch and complements the myriad colours your food comes in. Made by Dharmasala’s The Cold Mountain Studio, the handmade plates and cutlery is a delight to be served in. Only the freshest of produce can sing in those plates, and I was impressed by these smaller details.
The menu at Sequel is mostly a follow-up of everything that made them popular – the probiotic bowls, avo toasts, and immunity-boosting fare masterfully created to balance taste, produce, and presentation. The new menu accounts for 40% of the changes with small, sharing plates and a few wholesome main course dishes. We started with the Buckwheat, Rice Sourdough, which was soft and warm and came with generous amounts of truffle cashew cheese that slid down beautifully. A shout out to the sweet and smoked apple jam that was also polished off in record time and enhanced with virgin olive oil and sea salt. The Smoked Lotus Root Fritters with Greek yoghurt, red radish, and Kashmiri walnuts is a filler snack that reminds you of rainy evenings snuggled up a couch watching your favourite Netflix series.
I loved the Edamame & Chickpea Falafels served with coriander sauce, smoked aubergine, and pickled beetroot; it was as sublime as they come while the Smoked Hasselback Orange Sweet Potato with parsley sauce, and lacto-fermented coconut yoghurt with sumac made sure our stomachs were at peace with all the freshest produce. The star, however, for me, was the invincible taco that came with portobello mushrooms, roasted orange sweet potatoes dripping with habanero salsa and microgreens. We heard that the red snapper version is a better deal, so that’s on the next outing. It was a small plate, generous and extremely balanced in its flavours.
The main course was the Apple Wood-Smoked Black Rice with lotus root, edamame, and mushrooms served glamorously wrapped in banana leaf. To make it better, I even filmed it being doused in coconut milk broth with kaffir lime, lemongrass, birds eye chilli, and galangal poured over it for some Insta-reels. It’s a spectacle, and the black rice complements the shrimp perfectly while you get that warm feeling with the coconut broth – an altogether filling meal. The dessert offerings are minimal though but packed with a punch – the Dark chocolate cake with cacao ganache; and Poached pears, vanilla ice cream and seed crumble.
And as usual, Sequel once again brings fresh flavours and clean produce and gives them a fitting space in your plate. The additions – sauces, herbs, seeds, condiments – everything says high-quality produce prepared with health in mind while the restaurant follows all social distancing and sanitising protocols.
What’s coming up? There’s High Tea that is going to be on the menu soon in the afternoon while botanical cocktails and organic wines will also feature on the beverage menus. As for me, I’m grateful I have a new space to settle in, a space to eat out without feeling burdened and the new normal urging me to go clean and mindful when it comes to food.
